activation response therapy

We will be hosting Dr. Scott Dunaway from Chirostrength on Thursday December 15, 2016 from 7:00am – 12:00pm. He will be giving away FREE A.R.T (Active Release Technique). Contact us today to schedule or if you have any questions.

Active Release Technique, per Dr. Scott is: “a hands on treatment to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia aimed at improving function of these tissues. This is accomplished by breaking up adhesions in and between these tissues as well as restoring proper blood flow to areas that have become starved of adequate perfusion. With these combined results, the patient will experience decreased tension and tenderness in the muscles and will improve the results seen with the Adjustment.”

Come and check it out and learn more!

redox signaling molecules

Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter. Atoms combine to form molecules, unique chemical combinations of atoms held together by a chemical bond. The body uses different molecules as a way to signal changes needed or to communicate both within the cell and outside the cell. These molecules are categorized into different species such as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reduced Species (RS) or in total they are called redox signaling molecules. Actually, the body uses more than just oxygen species, such as reactive nitrogen species and reactive sulfur species, but oxygen species are the primary instigators of the signaling cascade or process.

These redox signaling molecules are so important because as stressors hit the body—whether it be heavy metals, harmful organisms, chemicals, pollution, or simply time and aging—those stressors decrease optimal cell function. When proper cell function declines and the ability to create and maintain redox signaling molecules is hampered then the body is not able to remove harmful substances, heal, or maintain energy. The overall functioning of the body decreases and dwindles as the individual cells decrease and dwindle in their ability to function.

There are many ways you can improve your redox potential or redox signaling in the body, however there are only a couple supplements that we know of that contain redox signaling molecules. The first supplement is Asea which contains the oxygen based mitochondrial redox signaling molecules (what human cells use). The second is Restore which contains carbon based bacterial redox signaling molecules (what bacteria use).

ASEA: communication help for your cells

ASEA can directly affect the redox potential of all the cells of the body by providing extra redox molecules into a weakened cell environment. These extra molecules then help the cell to function properly and heal or destroy as it is designed to do. From the Asea website: “Because the molecules in ASEA Redox Supplement are native to the body, they enhance vital cellular function to achieve optimal health and wellness. Drinking ASEA Redox Supplement every day enhances the ability of every cell in your body to function at a higher level, positively affecting the health of every system of the body.” Dr. Gary Samuelson, Ph.D. Atomic Medical Physicist, states, “Laboratory results with living cells have demonstrated over a 500% increase in efficacy of two native master antioxidants, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) even when very small concentrations of ASEA were added.” and also, “ASEA demonstrated zero toxicity. Any mechanism of action that causes cells to produce more antioxidants almost always involves a response to some sort of low-level toxicity-induced oxidative stress. ASEA is able to elicit the production of antioxidants in cells without eliciting any toxic response or oxidative stress. The technology behind ASEA is the only mixture (able to do this), to date, that has been shown to elicit antioxidant production without eliciting a toxic response. In this sense, ASEA is very unique.”

Restore: communication help for your bacteria

Restore takes into account something that many people are finally being awakened to: our body is greatly affected by our environment and gut biome. In many ways Restore might be even more important for the body than focusing solely on human cells since the epigenetic influence of organisms on our cells is so profound. Each person has trillions of bacteria in and on them. Being that a large majority of our immune system is found in our gut and the gut is populated by diverse amounts of bacteria—it has a direct and powerful impact on our health such that diseases can be predicted based on the types of bacteria found in different intestines.

According to Dr. Zach Bush, “RESTORE provides the communication network to support the return of biodiversity to the gut ecosystem that supports normal immune function. RESTORE is the first supplement on the market that functions as an antidote to glyphosate and gluten toxicity at the tight junction.” Restore provides an environment for the thousands of species necessary to thrive in the body as opposed to the 20-30 that you might find in a probiotic (which may cause an imbalance). By encouraging the gut biome to thrive a person can heal the lining of the intestines and provide the foundation for healing of all the body’s membranes thereby reducing systemic inflammation and healing myriads of conditions.

olive leaf benefits uses favorite

The olive tree is a pretty incredible plant. Everyone knows about olive oil and thereby olives, but it seems the olive leaf is undeservingly under-appreciated. The olive tree loves a warm climate where frost cannot touch its precious fruit and in many places individual olive trees are thousands of years old. Time-tested food and medicines are something LFA loves and seeing that olive leaves have been used medicinally for thousands of years and have a wide range of reported benefits, makes us all the more appreciative of this plant.

The unique molecule that provides many of the benefits is called oleuropein which can lower blood pressure, prevent arteriosclerosis, prevent cancer, prevent free radical damage, and strengthen immunity. Another favorite aspect of olive leaf is its antimicrobial activity, that is, it shows anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-protozoal, and anti-bacterial properties. It is hard to find remedies against viruses that are as effective as olive leaf. Olive leaf seems to impair the ability of viruses to use amino acids to replicate. In a 2003 study, olive leaf killed candida and e. coli, showing powerful antimicrobial activity.

Anecdotal evidence shows that people who use olive leaf for viral infection of all types experience excellent results. Often we forget how many ways viruses affect us, everything from chicken pox, cold sores, herpes, measles, mumps, rubella, flu (influenza), rotavirus, HIV, shingles and more have hit us hard or someone we know. Due to its far-reaching benefits, always having olive leaf on hand for year round health support can make it an invaluable tool to an individual or family. We recommend Olivus brand for its combination of quality and cost-effectiveness. It can be one of your go-to panaceas.

Did you eat cereal as a kid? Many of us growing up in the U.S. are well acquainted with breakfast cereals and while the majority of breakfast cereals are atrocious when it comes to nutritional value and in fact they do more harm than good, there are some that we would recommend occasionally if you are looking to enjoy memories of your youth.

Some important things to look for are organic, non-gmo, unrefined sweeteners, stable fats (no vegetable, soy, or canola oil), and ideally sprouted grains.

Here are some we like (in varying degrees of meeting the criteria):

Probably our current favorite are cereals from One Degree Organic Foods. We love that they sprout the grains and use coconut palm sugar to sweeten.

Organic Sprouted Brown Rice Cacao Crisps – Organic brown rice, organic coconut palm sugar, organic cacao, organic sunflower oil, organic sunflower lecithin, unrefined salt, tocopherols (vitamin E).

toxic fish

Most people think getting fish is a healthier option than other meat. While this may have been true at one time, taking into account the current state of the oceans and fish farms, eating fish may be one of the least healthy options. A recent article from highlights some of the problems:

“This elevated toxicity is quite significant. According to toxicology researcher Jerome Ruzzin Ph.D., in Norway, farmed salmon is one of the most toxic foods in the world! Overall, tests show farmed salmon contain five times more toxins than any other food product tested.”

“Farmed salmon also suffer other disturbing mutations. The flesh of the farmed salmon is “brittle,” and breaks apart when bent — a highly abnormal feature. The nutritional content is also wildly abnormal, which may have consequences for your health. Wild salmon contains about 5 to 7 percent fat whereas the farmed variety can contain anywhere from 14.5 to 34 percent. Many toxins readily accumulate in fat, which means even when raised in similarly contaminated conditions, farmed salmon will contain far more toxins than wild.”

“Fish farming, which began about 65 years ago, is considered by many to be one of the least sustainable approaches to farming.”

Even though there is so much contamination in the oceans and waters of the earth, there are some practical tips for finding and eating healthy sources of fish. First, we always recommending getting wild-caught fish and avoid all farmed fish. Second, look for smaller game fish as they typically have less toxins in their flesh–wild-caught salmon (Pacific or Alaskan, as all Atlantic salmon is farmed), herring, sardines, and anchovies all make better options for fish. Third, eat plenty of plant-based mineral rich produce as these foods can help protect your body against heavy metal contamination.

Nashville Nutrition Challenge

The holiday season continues and so does the challenge of eating well and staying healthy with the onslaught of holiday parties and family gatherings. As you probably know, at Life Fitness Academy we love tree foods. Food that comes from perennial plants such as trees is ideal because it has the right form of minerals (plant as opposed to rock) and because the root systems are more developed, the minerals are a better size (angstrom). So by consuming tree foods, you get food that is extremely easy to digest, hydrating, and has nutrients that are highly bioavailable.

For this month’s nutrition challenge we want to challenge you to simply eat 2-3 pieces of fruit before every meal (or as your meal) for one week. Maybe you want to pick the week before Christmas (this week), the week of, or the week after, whatever you decide, commit to the challenge and let us know how it goes! Have a question? Contact us.
